About Me

Learn more about my journey as a neuroscientist, developer, aviator, and creative entrepreneur, and my passion for bridging engineering and neuroscience.
Martin Wimmers
Hi, I'm Martin Wimmers, a PhD Candidate pursuing a joint doctorate at TU Eindhoven and Radboud University's Donders Institute. My research focuses on EEG-triggered transcranial ultrasound stimulation in the Care and Cure Lab and the Cognitive Neuromodulation Lab.

The Intersection of Engineering and Psychology

I've always been fascinated by how the world works. That curiosity led me to study Engineering Science at Berufskolleg Wesel in Germany (2015-2018), where I built a strong foundation in Constructional, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineering alongside Mathematics and Physics — learning to understand the laws that govern the physical world. After graduating, I realized that the same desire to uncover fundamental principles applied to people too. If nature follows laws, surely human behaviour does as well. That conviction led me to Radboud University, where I completed a BSc in Psychology (2018-2022), exploring how the mind works from a scientific perspective. With one foot in engineering and the other in psychology, I was looking for a field that truly combined both — and I found it in Neuroscience. I pursued an MSc in Cognitive Neuroscience (2022-2025) at the Donders Institute, focusing on robust neuromodulation of the thalamus through transcranial ultrasound stimulation. Neuroscience lets me apply engineering thinking to the most complex system there is: the human brain.

Beyond the Lab

Outside of academia, I work as a full-stack developer at NewHangar, building web platforms and keeping my engineering skills sharp through hands-on product development. In 2025 I also earned my Private Pilot License (PPL(A)) at E-Flight Academy in Teuge — flying is the perfect counterbalance to lab work, demanding the same mix of technical precision and calm decision-making but from a completely different vantage point.
